New Garden, Small Harvest, Big Flavor: Seed to Plate Tonight

This year brought us a brand new garden, and even as a seasoned gardener with 9 years under my belt, I’m reminded of that timeless rule: “The first year it sleeps, the second it creeps, and the third year it leaps.”

We’re definitely in sleeping/creeping season here, so our harvests are slower and smaller than I’d like. But the garden still showed up right when we needed it most.

My family was craving that bright, fresh red sauce for our handmade meatballs and pasta. I’d forgotten to pull from our usual canned stash… but the garden saved dinner. Ripe tomatoes straight off the vine, fresh herbs, pantry onions and garlic — that’s all it took.

If you’ve never made sauce from your own garden, you’re missing something special. There’s nothing quite like watching the journey from Seed to Plate come full circle in your own kitchen. The flavor of tomatoes and herbs picked at their peak is worlds away from what we usually find in stores. I’ve learned not to say “I don’t like” something until I’ve tried it fresh and in season.

Dinner was pure magic. The kind of silence that means it’s too good to speak — plates were cleaned and refilled two or three times. I swear, these growing girls are giving our teenage boy a run for his money! 😂

If you want the full red sauce recipe (plus dozens more seasonal favorites), it’s in our Seed to Plate recipe book — available in the shop along with a free downloadable pantry guide to help you stock up like a pro.

What’s growing in your garden right now? Drop your favorite fresh tomato dish below — I’d love to hear!

Enjoy!
